I sort of expected there would be, as I was able to install both the Win 7 Beta and Win 7 RC on my 5 year old Inspiron 9300 and it recognised the ATi Mobility Radeon X300 graphics card in that system, which is much older than the nVidia GeForce 8600M!īut I have had 'spotty' success with driver updates supplied by Microsoft in the past, so I was hoping that there would be some sort of updated drivers from Dell & nVidia, in case the basic drivers in Windows 7 aren't all that good. It's good to know that there are at least basic drivers for my nVidia card included in Windows 7.
The XPS M1330 had graphics drivers that are several generations newer than those offered for the Vostro 1700 (nVidia v176.44 as opposed to nVidia v101.43 respectively)! Why Dell has never updated the drivers available for the Vostro 1700 is a mystery to me especially as the v101.43 drivers were seriously buggy and unstable, as at least one other poster on this forum has recently complained about.Īccording the the Windows 7 Compatibility Centre website, the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT is fully compatible with Windows 7 x86 & 圆4, so I suspect that there will be a driver available, either out the box or via Windows Update, once I install the OS, but if there is a Dell specific driver I'm sure that would be better.Īny suggestions or help would be most welcome. As it is I'm already using updated graphics drivers, in Vista, from the XPS M1330, in place of the graphics drivers provided on the Drivers and Downloads page for the Vostro 1700. My question really is Does anyone know of a Dell notebook that has the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics adaptor and is supported/validated for Windows 7 by Dell? I would expect that graphcs drivers for such a system would also work with my Vostro 1700. When I spend over £1,600 (Sterling Pounds) on a system I don't expect it to be made obsolete within just 18 months of purchase! And I certainly don't have any intention of going out and buying a new system to get the new Windows OS! In that decision I think Dell are 'short-changing' their customers and will make a significant proportion of their customer base very frustrated and annoyed with them. I know, in their infinite wisdom, that Dell have decided not to support Windows 7 on the Vostro 1700, eventhough it more than meets the hardware requiremens for the new OS.

I am now about to replace the x86 Vista Business OS with Windows 7 Professional 圆4 and I'm looking for compatible drivers for the Graphics Adaptor. I originally specified it with the maximum amount of RAM, 4Gb, the Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor and the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics adaptor and was dissapointed that I could not specify the 64bit version of Windows Vista Business Edition at that time. I have a Dell Vostro 1700 notebook that is just over 18 months old.
